Maartje Strijbis

Maartje Strijbis, 1985, Amsterdam. She is a portrait and conceptual documentary photographer. She holds a bachelors degree in Theatre studies from the University of Amsterdam and studied jazz vocals at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. From a young age she photographed everything with her grandmother's analogue box cameras. This way of recording and storytelling became intertwined with her musical and performance practice, an eclectic mix of soundscapes, installations, performance interventions in landscape, photographic images – both analogue and digital, song and video. Maartje studied at the International Institute of Photography, the FOTOfactory, where she graduated in 2018 with a successful exhibition. She works on transmedia stories concerning desire for isolation, sublime natural experiences, mythology, rituals and boundaries where humans and nature meet. Maartje is intrigued by people, their habits and environments. Due to a broad field of study she works interdisciplinary and with a sharp eye for analytical observation as well as practical creative input. Portraits are her strength.
